Which travel insurance to choose

Updated on June 01, 20265 min read

Travel insurance is the one line you hope to never use — and the one you absolutely want when you need it. A single emergency medical evacuation can cost 50 000 € out of pocket. Here is how to pick the right plan without overpaying.

What a good plan must cover

Three coverages matter more than the rest: emergency medical and hospitalization (target at least 100 000 €), medical evacuation and repatriation (at least 250 000 €), and trip cancellation/interruption (up to the value of your bookings).

Liability, lost luggage and gadget cover are nice-to-have but rarely make or break a claim. Focus the budget on the first three.

Single trip vs annual multi-trip vs nomad

A single-trip plan is the cheapest if you travel 1–2 times per year.

An annual multi-trip plan starts to pay off at 3+ trips per year, with a cap on the duration of each individual trip (usually 30 to 90 days).

A nomad / long-stay plan (subscription-based, monthly billed) is the right fit for trips longer than 60 days, digital nomads and people without a fixed home.

Check what you already have

Premium credit cards often include 90 days of basic travel medical and trip cancellation when the trip is paid with the card. It is rarely enough as standalone coverage, but it can complement a cheaper standalone plan.

Buy before you leave

Most plans require you to subscribe before the departure date. A few will accept post-departure subscriptions with a 5–10 day waiting period during which you are not covered — avoid the gap if you can.
