How to create an animated travel map

Updated on June 01, 20264 min read

An animated travel map turns a static itinerary into a short, share-ready video. In this guide you will create your first animation in Travel Story Maker — from blank canvas to a downloadable MP4 — without installing any software.

Open the editor

Go to the Create page from the top navigation. The editor loads with a full-screen map on the right and a sidebar on the left to manage your stops, vehicles and animation settings.

Nothing is saved on a server: your route lives in your browser and is restored automatically next time you visit.

Add your first stops

Use the search bar in the sidebar to find a city, address or landmark. Press Enter to add it as the first stop. Repeat for each destination — at least two are required to draw a route.

You can also click directly on the map to drop a custom stop, then rename it from the sidebar.

Pick a vehicle for each segment

Each segment between two stops can use its own vehicle. Pick a plane for intercontinental hops, a car or train for road segments, a bike for the last mile. Travel Story Maker automatically chooses straight flight curves for planes and snaps to real roads for ground vehicles.

Customize the look

Open the Animation panel to change the map style (light, dark, satellite, vintage…), the route color and thickness, the global speed and the easing. Switch to globe projection for long international trips.

Preview and export

Click Preview to watch the animation play in real time. When you are happy, head to the Export page to render an MP4 or WebM in 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9 — ready for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
